Nungwi is the more developed and lively of the two. It grew from a traditional fishing and dhow-building village and is now one of Zanzibar’s main beach destinations.
It is a good choice for travellers who want beach time plus plenty to do — restaurants, beach bars, diving, boat trips, local activity and a more social atmosphere.

What to do:
Kendwa is just south of Nungwi and has a quieter, more resort-focused feel. Its wide white-sand beach, clear water and west-facing position make it particularly attractive for swimming, relaxing and watching the sunset.
Unlike many beaches on Zanzibar’s east coast, the tidal effect around Kendwa is relatively limited, so swimming is generally possible for much of the day.
Best for:
Kendwa also has a livelier side around certain beach events and full-moon parties, so it isn’t completely quiet.
